Excellent properties of UHMWPE fiber

UHMWPE fiber has many excellent properties, such as excellent mechanical properties, excellent impact resistance, excellent wear resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, excellent light resistance and so on.

1. Excellent mechanical properties of UHMWPE fiber.

UHMWPE fiber has excellent mechanical properties. Under the same linear density, the tensile strength of UHMWPE fiber is 15 times that of steel wire rope. It is 40% higher than aramid fiber, which is also one of the three high-tech fibers in the world, and 10 times higher than high-quality steel fiber and ordinary chemical fiber. Compared with steel, E-glass, nylon, polyamine, carbon fiber and boron fiber, its strength and modulus are higher than those of these fibers, and its strength is the highest among the materials of the same quality.

2.Excellent impact resistance of UHMWPE fiber

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has excellent impact resistance. Its ability to absorb energy and resist impact during deformation and molding is higher than that of aramid fiber and carbon fiber, which are also the “three high-tech fibers in the world”. Compared with polyamide, aramid, E glass fiber, carbon fiber and aramid fiber, UHMWPE fiber has higher total energy absorption than impact.

3. Excellent wear resistance of UHMWPE fiber

Generally speaking, the greater the modulus of the material, the lower the wear resistance, but for UHMWPE fiber, the opposite is true. Because UHMWPE fiber has a lower friction coefficient, the greater the modulus, the higher the wear resistance. Comparing the friction coefficient of UHMWPE fiber with that of carbon fiber and aramid fiber, the wear resistance and bending fatigue of UHMWPE fiber are much higher than that of carbon fiber and aramid fiber. So its wear resistance is better than other high-performance fibers. Because of its excellent wear resistance and bending resistance, its processing performance is also superior, and it is easy to be made into other composite materials and fabrics.

4.Chemical corrosion resistance of UHMWPE fiber

The chemical structure of UHMWPE fiber is relatively simple and its chemical properties are relatively stable. Moreover, it has a highly crystalline structure orientation, which makes it less vulnerable to the attack of active genes in strong acids and strong bases, and can maintain its original chemical properties and structure. Therefore, most chemical substances are not easy to corrode it. Only a few organic solutions can slightly swell it, and its mechanical property loss is less than 10%. The strength retention of UHMWPE fiber and aramid fiber in different chemical media was compared. The corrosion resistance of UHMWPE fiber is obviously higher than that of aramid fiber. It is particularly stable in acid, alkali and salt, and its strength is only lost in sodium hypochlorite solution.

5.Excellent light resistance of UHMWPE fiber

Because the chemical structure of UHMWPE fiber is stable, its light resistance is also the best among high-tech fibers. Aramid fiber is not UV resistant and can only be used under the condition of avoiding direct sunlight. Comparing UHMWPE fiber with nylon, aramid with high modulus and low modulus, the strength retention of UHMWPE fiber is significantly higher than that of other fibers.

6.Other properties of UHMWPE fiber

UHMWPE fiber also has good hydrophobic property, water and moisture resistance, electrical insulation property and long tortuous life. It is the only high-tech fiber that can float on the water, and it is also an ideal low-temperature material.

But it also has its disadvantages, that is, the melting point is low. During processing, the temperature shall not exceed 130 ℃, otherwise, the creep phenomenon will occur and the service life will be shortened due to the weak force between molecular chains of UHMWPE fibers. There is no dye group on the UHMWPE fiber, which makes its wettability poor. It is difficult for the dye to penetrate into the fiber, resulting in poor dyeing performance. These shortcomings affect the scope of its application.
